PROJECT IN PISCO (ICA -PERU) HELP CHILDREN AND SINGLE MOTHERS OF PISCO
Construction Project for a School in Pisco, Perú
A) Description of the area and the situation in Pisco
The earthquake in Peru:
The earthquake in Perú occurred on August 15, 2007 at 6:40:57pm Standard Time UTC. It lasted approximately 210 seconds. The epicenter of the quake was located along the coast in the center of Perú, 40 kilometers west of Chincha Alta and 150 kilometers southwest of Lima. This earthquake is considered to be the worst in 100 years in this region.
This catastrophe, which had a magnitude of 7.9 on the Richter scale, left 595 dead, 1,800 injured, 76,000 dwellings totally destroyed and inhabitable, and 319,866 people whose lives were impacted. 763 schools were severely damaged leaving 220,000 students and 8,000 professors without a place to continue their studies and work.
The most affected areas were the provinces of Pisco, Ica, Chincha, and Cañete.
The area of our work:We will be working in Pisco, located 231 kilometers south of Lima. It was founded on October 19, 1900, and is one of five provinces that make up the Peruvian region of Ica. It lies in the north-central part of the region and borders: the province of Chincha (to the north), the Huanavelica region (to the east), the province of Ica (to the south), and the Pacific Ocean (to the west).
In Pisco, the buildings are constructed with:
Housing Material |
Percentage |
Brick or Concrete |
45.19 % |
Stone or Ashlar ( Quarry Stone) |
0.11 % |
Adobe or Mudwall |
47.57 % |
Marsh Plant and Mud |
2.98 % |
Stone with Clay |
0.12 % |
Wood |
0.36 % |
Straw |
3.41 % |
Other |
0.25% |
Seventy-five percent of the buildings, which were not constructed of brick or concrete, were severely damaged or completely destroyed. Unfortunately, these dwellings almost always belong to the poorest people without means to build with a more resilient material. Therefore, during the earthquake, the houses of the poor were the first to fall
Situation of Pisco
B) Description and costs for the construction of the school in Pisco “Yanapaq Maki Kuna” 1) The property:
Approximately 1000 square meters will be needed for construction of the school. This amount of space is necessary in order to add extra classrooms to the school during the following years. We will start with the elementary school in 2008. The following year we will expand in order to create a high school. We will also have a large yard as a playground for the students. In order to buy the land for the development of the school, we need approximately $8000 dollars.
2) Plans for the construction of the new school:
• Seven classrooms for the children: each class will have a capacity of 35 students, totaling roughly 245 students. These children are currently unable to attend school because of the earthquake´s destruction. We will begin our work with one kindergarten class and six classes at the elementary school level, one for each grade (first – sixth). Because Pisco has been declared in a state of emergency, the government will pay for the salaries of the teachers who will work in the school. They will also provide breakfast at no cost for the students, single mothers, and other children under the school´s care.
The construction of this school is absolutely necessary. If it is not established immediately, these children will lose an entire year of education. These children and their families will also lose the opportunity to receive food during 2008.
In order to purchase all of the necessities for the school ( 42 large tables – 6 for each class, 245 chairs – 35 for each class, 8 shelves or cupboards for keeping classroom items – 1 for each class and 1 for the principal’s office, 1 television, 1 DVD player, 8 teacher’s desks – 1 for each class and 1 for the principal’s office, 8 adult chairs – 1 for each class and 1 for the principal’s office) we will need $3,450 dollars.
• One kitchen and dining room: the kitchen and dining room will have a holding capacity of 60 families, the number who may come everyday for breakfast, lunch and dinner. In Perú, these are called “los comedores populares,” which are restaurants where people can eat well at a low cost. The government will cover 50% of the cost of the food and we will be responsible for purchasing the remaining 50%. In order to cover this cost, each family will pay a small price for the food it takes home. However, breakfast (all meals?) will be completely free for the children and single mothers enrolled in the project. Only families that are not involved in the project will pay for their food. Additionally, the local government will provide a nutritionist who will offer assistance in maintaining a healthy and well-balanced menu. (There are a lot of mothers who cannot work or whose job efficiently is affected because they have to cook for their families. With the dining room and kitchen, these women will be able to focus on personal and work development since they won’t be cooking.)
In order to buy all of the items (1 gas stove, 40 dishes, 40 cups/glasses, 4 pans, 2 pots, 40 spoons, 40 forks, 40 knives, 4 pitchers, 3 thermoses, 1 large supply shelf, and 1 big table) $650 dollars will be needed.
• 10 bathrooms with showers: One of the major problems Pisco faces is the lack of bathrooms and showers. By having these installed, we will protect the health of the poorest people.
In order to purchase the necessary items (10 bathroom/shower accessories, 10 medium towels, 10 large towels, 10 combs, and 1medicine cabinet) we will need $640 dollars.
• 1 large meeting room: This will be used for our religious services to receive and praise our Lord Jesus Christ. This room will also be used for the meetings of the project and different organized groups in Pisco (who often have no other place to hold their events than the plaza or street.) It will also be used for performances, children’s birthday parties, etc. In order to buy all of the necessary equipment (1 large speaker, 1 microphone, and 1 radio) we will need $140 dollars.
