THE ZUMIRE FAMILY
MODESTA ZUMIRE MAMANI is mother to three children. Modesta has problems with alcoholism and for this reason it is questionable whether the care of her children is sufficient. When we went to visit the family, the children were absent, and are often abandoned to care for themselves. There are times when they do not eat as their mother has not prepared them meals due to her distracted state.
Modesta does not have a form of employment, and is illiterate.
GLADYS TACO ZUMIRE, 12 years old, her eldest daughter, has become the sole carer of and surrogate mother to her younger siblings. Gladys also attends a night school in order to progress in the education she had been lacking.
RUTI TACO ZUMIRE, 6 years old, has never been to school and has problems with speaking. She now attends the “Jardin” classes of the project.
TITO TACO ZUMIRE, 5 years old, also has speech problems, especially with pronunciation, and also attends the “Jardin” classes of the project.
Modesta looks after the house that they live in for another owner. The adobe walls of the house are in structural disrepair and literally crumbling around the small area in which they live. The family lack kitchen facilities and cook their food over firewood. The children all sleep in a single bed.
