• THE CHOQUE FAMILY
GUADALUPE CHOQUE is mother to three daughters. She has never received financial support from her estranged husband who disappeared 10 years ago after the birth of her third daughter. To this day, nobody knows as to his whereabouts.
She has always been the sole head of the household for her three daughters. She works washing clothes and cleaning houses ad hoc, this is her sole source of income. Despite occupying a terrace of roughly 70m squared, the whole family live in a single room while the three daughters all share a single bed. The house has a basic form of drainage, but no bathroom or toilet facilities attached. Her oldest daughter, YAQUELIN CHAMPI CHOQUE, 16 years old, never went to school. Eager to learn, she now studies in a night school and is about to complete her first year (the equivalent level of a 12 year old).
Yaquelin´s younger sister, BEATRIZ CHAMPI CHOQUE, 14 years old, is severely disabled. She lacks the use of her legs, has never been able to speak and rarely leaves the one room that the whole family shares. Confined to her bed, she is in desperate need of a wheelchair to be able to leave the house. Guadalupe, her mother, believes Beatriz´s condition is due to a contraceptive injection she was given whilst unaware of her early pregnancy. The family often refer to Beatriz´s condition as Down´s Syndrome due to lack of diagnosis, but the disorder pertains more to that of Cerebral Palsy.
The youngest daughter, JULIA CHAMPI CHOQUE is10 years old. She currently attends school, but has many learning difficulties with reading and writing leading to her repeating grades and not being able to advance in her studies. She also experiences urilogical problems which have never been treated.
