Social and economic context of the Cusco: |
|
52 % of the population is female and 48 % men.
Only 15 % of the population who works are professional. Of this percentage only 0.8 % is women.
Of the whole, women with families, only 5.5 % work and are the sole support of their families. The rest are "landladies of house " (they are employed at the house).
There are many stereotypes about women and work. For example: for many men, a woman who works is a woman who wants to be a man (a lesbian). A real woman takes care of their children, cooks well, washes and does not go out of the house. It is difficult to think about a woman as boss. A woman who works is unfaithful. A woman is never going to be as efficient as a man. A woman who works is never going to have a happy and united family, etc. Because of these stereotypes and others, a woman cannot work and if she does, she usually has many problems with her husband and neighbors.

There are many stereotypes about men also. For example: a man is the "king" of the house. Only the man must support his family. The men do not cook. Only the man can go out with his friends. A real man does not do the work of the house, etc. All that seems of an ancient novel, but it is our sad reality and many of women suffer ill-treatment by their husbands or cohabitants.
And naturally, for persons without much education, the stereotypes are more prevalent.
Normally, young men marry between 19 and 25 years. In the poorest sectors, normally marry younger and as a result of an unplanned pregnancy. In the more affluent sectors, men marry between 29 and 34 years.
Currently in young poor families, it is common to have four or five children, many of which are not planned. This is one of the reasons that 38 % of the population of Peru are children, teenagers and young men and women (from 5 to 24 years of age).
Of every 10 physical and emotional aggressions to women, only 2 are denounced, the rest are considered to be a part of the "problems" of the family.
The mistreatment of children is very frequent because the parents do not have suitable education. For example, there are some parents who make their children sit on warm bricks because these children wet themselves in the bed. They believe this will cure them of this " disease of the cold." Many children go to the hospital with burns from this remedy. Other mistreatments are due to violent or alcoholic parents, as a result of economic and/or personal frustrations.
Out of of every 10 illiterate people, 7 are women.
There is a lot of marginalization in schools and in the social life in general against the illiterate persons.
